Chrome Extension adding maps to catalog pages
Add this free Google Chrome extension to include maps in your Suffolk County library catalog search results. After installation, links appear within results to launch geographic and library shelf maps.
Geographic maps are available for all libraries. Shelf maps are available at participating libraries. To have links to your collection maps appear, reach out to the team at CatalogMaps631@gmail.com.
Instructions
- Make sure you're using the Google Chrome web browser.
- Add the extention to your browser from the Chrome Web Store.
- Note: After clicking "Add to Chrome," a notice appears alerting you this extension can read and change data on discover.library.com and search.livebrary.com. The extension reads these pages to extract info in order to create the maps. It does not share any browsing data and does not interact with other sites.
- For discover.livebrary.com users:
- Load your first maps with "Map Libraries!" and "Locate Me!" on this example page.
- For search.livebrary.com users:
- Load your first maps with "Map Libraries!" and "Locate Me!" on this example page.
- Continue to use the catalog as you normally would, clicking map buttons when helpful.
Shelf Mapping
Shelf mapping can be added at your library. Our team will handle all the details creating:
- a floor plan
- a shelf inventory
- a call number parsing algorithm
- a server to send shelf maps and location information to the extension
About the Project
Dan Murphy conceived of the project while working as a part-time librarian. He currently works as a software engineer and continues to moonlight as a librarian.
